5 out of 5 stars better than the avg tv   May 27, 2008
Drew Luetjen (San Francisco, CA)
This is an incredibly good looking tv. It has great quality being that it is HD and 42" is much better than what I had going in the past. This one exceeds all expectations in my mind. The only thing that screwed with me is that the screen can be smeared and damaged easily and cleaning products don't work that well on this kind of tv. Now I have smudges I can't seem to get rid of. Also it never comes HD ready either. I didn't agree with that.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Find a Better Deal!   April 2, 2008

I am NOT a TV guru, but I did a lot of research before buying the 42" PHILIPS 720P LCD HDTV. I was confused about the meaning of 720P and 1080 and blah blah blah. The 720P makes up the color between pixels instead of giving you the "true" picture. It fills in the blank more or less. Well to my surprise, IT DOESN'T MATTER!!! I looked at a 720P and 1080P side by side in the store and I could not tell a difference AT ALL! I have 20/20 vision, I am not cross-eyed and I don't have an eyepatch. SO If it makes you feel better to purchase the 1080 and pay an extra $600.00 to buy you peice of mind, I say do it. However, as somebody who usually upgrades when buying a car from cloth to leather, getting the house with the extra bedroom and bath or 9 times out of 10 goes ahead with the 4 GB instead of 2 GB just in case, I can honestly say I don't regret getting the 720P and I think it was a heck of a deal. Buying a 42" LCD made by a trusted name in electronics all for less than a thousand bucks? Can't beat it with a stick!
Oh yeah, and the picture and sound are awsome. The TV itself has a surround sound feature that is pretty good and it puts out plenty of sound to fill a 15x18 room. My only recommendation is that you set the backlight up a hair so black shows as a dark grey instead of black black. I really like this TV and I would buy philips again if I could get the same bang for my buck...

3 out of 5 stars Bad Egg   October 10, 2007

After researching HD products, and believing I had found a good deal, I order the Philips 42" LCD widescreen. After receiving it and setting it up I watched great TV for about 4 or 5 weeks before the power supply crashed and my TV was completely dead. Needless to say I was upset.

3 weeks later the TV is up and running again (at no additional cost to me due to the 1 year warrenty). This could have been a bad egg 1 in every 10,000 tvs have, so I can't say "Philips TVs suck!", but you make up your mind.

Other aspects: Picture is "OK". A nice crisp image that is obviously better than regular TV but it doesn't make me feel the need to worship before it or anything. The TV has a nice feature that will automatically stretch or shrink any analog input size to wisescreen, but it tends to stretch the outer most limits of the picture. This is only a little distracting and not the end of the world. Note: when the TV is displaying Widescreen HD input everything is perfectly sized.

Sound is decent for TV sound.

The TV has a lot of customization settings that allow you to choose preference of mood and cool or warm colors.

The stand the TV comes with is very nice and heavy. the TV tilts with ease to the right or the left. Exluding the Power Supply Melt Down I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5, but if I could do it again I'd look for a different TV. Hope this helps.
