4 out of 5 stars Toshiba DR410 tunerless DVD recorder   October 12, 2008
John Lucarelli
I believe that this product is fine, but I had to return it because I do not have the resources (space and equipment) to use this. My equipment is old and I am too old to get new TV and Vcr and DVD players.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for.   October 6, 2008
C. Cartwright (Keaau, Hawaii)
I was looking to archive my old Hi-8 video tapes and this did just that. A very short learning curve. Once on a power failure I was sure I had made a coaster, but no the unit recovered where it was on that DVD disk and went ahead and appended the rest of the video. A good no frill product.

4 out of 5 stars as advertised   September 30, 2008

Very happy with my purchase. I bought one for myself and one for my father. This unit is easy to install and easy to operate. great value for the money. I could have bought one with more bells and whistles for a lot more money, but so far this is a great investment. great buy for someone who needs just the basic recorder/player.

1 out of 5 stars e-waste special   September 18, 2008

I bought this four months ago, expecting something solid but not spectacular. All things considered, I'd have been better off setting my $120 on fire. At least then I wouldn't have to find some place to recycle this piece of trash.

My D-R410 now does a fine job of wasting a few minutes in each futile attempt at reading a variety of pre-recorded DVDs and CDs, as well as blank DVD-Rs. It is equally adept at failing with all of those formats.

While I realize my experience may be an exception, take this for what it's worth. Something that doesn't work out of the box may be a hassle to return, but when the fine Chinese craftsmanship holds up just long enough to pass the 90 day warranty period it's a complete waste.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Video Quality   September 7, 2008

I wish this was a better unit; but the test of a DVD recorder is image quality, and this one is quite poor.

I recorded a ton of the 2008 Olympics on this Toshiba. I was greatly disappointed looking at the DVDs. I recorded from HD transmissions via my HD tuner output; something I've done before with other recorders, and I had much better results.

This is my 3rd DVD recorder in the last 5 years, and this one is the worst. It is worth a fee to get rid of this. I'm not plugging other brands; just a warning this model is cheap in all ways. Just maybe other Toshiba's aren't so bad; but I won't gamble that again.

The unit's best quality mode, "XP", records only 1 hour per disc. This mode looks pretty good, with only occasional image problems. However, there should not be ANY artifacts on a 1 hour mode disc, based on comparing other older DVD recorder's "best mode".

The 2 hour mode, "SP", is just awful. It looks like other recorders 4 or 6 hour mode. I see big, fat blocks, digital "sparkle" and cracking in the image, and other constantly annoying visual artifacts. Again my older recorders don't have this poor video quality in 2 hour mode.

If you aren't fussy about image quality and have a small TV you may not care, but future large/HD TVs will show these recordings as 3rd rate.
*** I would not recommend this to anyone.
