while i did have an issue when first starting i was able to resolve it and am VERY glad i did. this is a very good machine. [issue concerned the initial set up where the instructions and phone help, were somewhat confusing]

1 out of 5 stars Save your self a headache and buy something else   September 28, 2008

I bought this DVD/VCR recorder 4 months ago. It never did perform to my satisfaction. The software on the digital tuner freezes up, you have to restart the machine or switch from digital to analog and then back to digital so it will work again. The scanner takes too long to change channels, so if you like to channel surf you better have a lot of patience. Two weeks ago the VCR quit playing videos and then a brand new DVD wouldn't play in it. I had to get out my old DVD player to watch the movie! Sometimes it can't even read its own recordings. Save your self a headache and buy something else.

Philip's DVD VCR tuner is easy to install and easy to operate from their owner's manual. The recordings are clear. The price is good considering it has it's own tuner and is of good quality.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't work on timer when using daily recording   August 27, 2008

This product only works if you don't use the "daily" timer programing. For instance I wanted to tape a soap that comes on M-F at the same time each day. I programmed it and it taped the show and when I went to watch it, I couldn't get it to turn on because it was programmed for everyday and nothing worked except to unplug and manually remove my tape.

I returned it and had a replacement sent, but I have not tried to use the multi-day timer, but for a single program it works ok. That is only the VCR portion of this recorder, I have yet to try the DVDR recording option.

1 out of 5 stars Skip this model unless you want to sent it back at your expense!!   August 20, 2008

I googled model #DVDR3545V and this Philips model with a /37 came up here, along with lots and lots of really negative reviews on the web of the model without the /37. Since it states in the description that this model (with the /37) is a reconditioned model I have to wonder if Philips has taken all the DVDR3545V's returned for not functioning and reconditioned them . . . .

As background to that comment: I bought the DVDR3545 model without doing any research first unfortunately. After buying it and setting it up, it worked for a total of 2 days. In fact, it stopped working with a brand new VHS tape in it which it would not release. I returned the recorder with the tape still inside it. The tech people are nice and try to help but mostly it's just send it back for a replacement--and the customer pays the shipping. Oh if only I had done my homework as there is nothing but gloom and doom in reviews for the DVDR3545V model. Some people who PAID to ship this piece of junk back discovered that the replacement model didn't work either.

It would appear from the reviews here that the /37 model, reconditioned or not, is getting better reviews but BEWARE as the model I bought (DVDR3545V) without the /37 is still being sold in stores and there are negative reviews here of the /37 model as well.

This model (and probably all other Philips electronics) was assembled in China but one can only place just so much blame on the Chinese people for the junk being put together over there and imported back into the good ole USA. Much of the blame lies with CEO's of these companies who want, no, who insist, on putting together items as cheaply as possible while continuing to sell them here at premium prices.

So, again, based on my experience and multiple negative reviews all over the web, be wary of this product. It is NOT cheap and add to that shipping to get a replacement . . . . My other equipment are Sony's and I wish, wish, wish, I'd stuck with that brand. The reason I bought the Philips DVDR3545V was because it takes VHS (which is fast becoming obsolete). What good is a VHS recorder/player though if the thing spends all its time commuting between your house and the replacement center at Philips??????
