Amazon.com Product Description
Note: The Toshiba 30HF84 30" TheaterWide HD-Ready Flat-Screen TV is no longer being manufactured. You may want to consider purchasing the newer Toshiba 30HF85 30" Widescreen HD-Ready Flat Screen TV instead.

With its widescreen dimension and wealth of picture-enhancing technologies, Toshiba's remarkably affordable 30HF84 is set to bring you into the digital future. The set sports 2 high-definition component-video inputs and an HDMI direct-digital connection for hookup with a DTV set-top box or HD satellite receiver. What's more, the 30-inch set's FST PURE fine-pitch flat picture tube not only looks great, it minimizes unwanted reflections from room light and increases viewing angles while enhancing picture linearity.

Improving upon standard interlaced signals (like those from DVD player, cable box, and VCR composite-video outputs), Toshiba's CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all signals to 1080i resolution. A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction ensures sharp, clean pictures from RF (older VCR, laserdisc) and composite-video signals.

DFine high-speed VSM (velocity-scan modulation) also improves definition at picture edges by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. Finally, Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown reversal) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.

As standard video amplifiers increase the gain of the video signal, video bandwidth tends to decrease. This eliminates the higher frequencies, reducing resolution. The 30HF84's wideband video amplifier maintains the higher frequencies, enabling higher resolution and greater sharpness and detail.

Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players or satellite receivers). And, with direct video input selection, you can directly select inputs from the remote's numbered keypad instead of having to scroll through all of them.

Two sets of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs (all including S-video) foster easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console, and a rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver.

The set's stereo speakers are powered by 10 watts per channel, and SRS WOW processing combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass low-frequency enhancement, and Focus (which clarifies voices).

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your television. HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

5 out of 5 stars Great TV   December 9, 2008

Great TV. I received this TV back in 2004, and have been pleased with it ever since. The picture is great and the connectivity is pretty good too. The only complaint I have is the weight. 130lbs is pretty heavy, but to be expected with a CRT tv this size. Amazon's shipping company put a small crack in the side of the casing (cosmetic only), which was disappointing, but Amazon said they would RMA it with no problem, but I didn't want to send it back. Otherwise, Great product.

4 out of 5 stars Reliable and great picture after two years...   May 12, 2008

I figured I would put my two cents in on this baby. I bought the Toshiba at the local Best Buy two years ago to get into the HDTV game at a reasonable price. Since then I've gotten a Westinghouse 32"LCD for our finished basement room. But you know what? This TV is still our primary one. If you were to compare HD picture versus HD picture between the two, the LCD would probably edge it out slightly.

But that's not to say the HD on the Toshiba is bad. Far from it - it looks fantastic! You need to set the picture quality to one you like. I concur with what someone else said - "movie" is way too dark. Sports is pretty good. You also need to fart around with the color, tint, balance, etc. to get the most out of it. But when you do it's worth it - an amazing picture.

One area where this kind of TV beat the LCD is in the televising of just a plain old digital signal. For as good as HD looks on an LCD, the regular 480p digital signals just look a little bit "off" to me. But on the Toshiba the colors look vibrant and everything really "pops" alot better.

I feel bad for the people that have had bad experiences with this TV. But if you look at the best, top of the line Sony, you'll find similar reviews of what a piece of junk it is because of X, Y and Z. Personally I think all TV's are being made to be "disposable" these days, but that's just my opinion.

You could do worse than this CRT HDTV from Toshiba. The only real drawback in my book is the size. It's a behemoth. Don't plan on moving it too much once you have it where you want it. But for me, after two years, so far so good. I have a Time Warner HD box plugged into it via HDMI and it looks wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars No problems whatsoever   January 11, 2008

This Toshiba HDTV has worked perfectly since the day I bought it. Despite the weight (which makes it tough to move), the picture quality is better than a thin HDTV in my book. I don't understand all these people who have had problems with their product when mine has worked perfectly for two years.

5 out of 5 stars One of BEST CRT "tube" TVs out there.   August 16, 2006

I got this baby in late 2004 I've been in love with it since. Today, due to a move and much larger living room I'm retiring this sexy baby for a 50-inch plasma (I still feel the pain).

There is NOTHING that compares with a "true" CRT video image and this Toshiba (or its 32" sister) is THE CRT TV to own. As a television professional I monitor TV programs and quality-check graphics, video and animations every single day --- all using CRT broadcast monitors (monitors with a bit higher resolution than a consumer TV). Should I start monitoring HDTV programming today, the 30HF84 would be THE monitor I'd choose to be installed in my office to continue enjoying high-end graphics and video footage only a CRT can provide.

I'm highly pleased with the performance (ABSOLUTE silence while powered on), surprisingly powerfull and rich sounds (despite tiny speakers) and HDTV in 1080 as well as 720 (the set switches modes automatically upon channel change, for ex: ABC-HD and DiscoveryHD).

Standard NTSC image isn't bad all in comparison to often-pixelating LCD, Rear-projection, and some plasma TVs - except for Panasonic's PRO TH**PH9UK series.

I'm retiring this baby for the above-mentioned series 50" Plasma from my living room, but this 30" CRT is coming with me... to the bedroom. I can't wait... Long Live CRT!!!

1 out of 5 stars Toshiba TV's are not reliable.   June 24, 2005

I purchased a Toshiba HDTV and had it fail just after the 2 year warranty expired. Toshiba explained there was nothing they would do back up their product. No TV should fail after 2 years. I recommend selecting another brand, you can get the same performance and price, and end up with a more reliable product.
