3 out of 5 stars Picture, Sound, Upconverting very good....   March 7, 2010
Cardel (Canada)
In terms of picture quality, this player does a good job at playing both Blu-Ray material and DVD with very good upconverting. The sound quality is also very good. Now comes the bad: this player is very slow in just about every respect. I purchased 2012 on BD and it took forever to load, this was the case with the BD of Knowing as well. I'm shocked that a brand like Pioneer which is known for upscale products has not found a way to improve on the speed. The other complaint I have is with customer support. Without going too much into detail, it sucks. Maybe it's just me but I tried calling for support on how to adjust the settings for analogue 5.1 connection since my receiver doesn't have HDMI and I wasn't getting proper playback. The phone rep said there were no settings and the problem was with my receiver. The attitude was not acceptable and when I asked to speak to a technician, I had to leave a message to which I never got an answer. The same thing with email support, I sent email on 18th Aug., re-sent on 24th Sept and finally got a response on the 24th of Sept (2009). The answer was vague at best.
If I had a dollar for everytime my guests told me I should buy a PS3, I would be able to afford a PS3.
If you don't mind waiting for start-up, loading,...go ahead and buy but if you want speed, stay away!

I'll cut right to the chase. Excellent Blu Ray playback and great audio but standard DVD upscaling is horrible on my display. I updated to the newest firmware (3.41) with little to no improvement operationally. Additionally it does not support 720p scaling which may be a factor in playback quality and something to be considered if you are not using a 1080p display. Setup is somewhat complicated in comparison to other units I have owned. I'm sticking with my Yammy 1800 for SD and Panny BR 60 for Blu Ray applications.

4 out of 5 stars picture quality   February 15, 2010

have watched about 10 DVD's and all the Blueray's play great. The only small complaint is it does not play all the older DVD's but it is for blueray so can't really complain about that.

When to considering buying a blu-ray. Question is what type of tv do you own lcd or plasma? I bought this player for my plasma tv samsung. Reason i bought a lg bd370 the blu ray player kept blacking out on start up and loading the movie on my tv. But when hooked up to lcd the bd370 is great. also a nice feature is on the pioneer that the lg does not have is the stop button lets you resume the movie the lg you have to book mark or pause or you have to start all over. i would recomend the pioneer bdp-320 for plasma it has better response. i bought this player at amazon bdp 320 the response time is not slow at all on plasma have not hooked it up to lcd. actually i had seen the bdp320 at a local dealer and it was slow but the one i ordered from amazon totaly impressed me even before i did the upgrade fast.one more post about the lg bd370 is the home menu has highlighted boxes which burns in a little on plasma the pioneer bdp320 has moving emblem the lg home menu is still. so if plasma i would recomend this one if lcd the lg bd370 works great. one more thing i forgot is the loading tray on the pioneer bdp 320 is deep not like the lg no worries about getting the disc caught when closing the tray this feauture is great. The same problem happened to me on the lg bd 370 if not in the slot correctly the disc gets caught and when you have blu-ray disc the last thing you want is scatched disk!
